The CAP Prize is the international Prize for Contemporary African Photography awarded annually since 2012 to five photographers whose works were created on the African continent, or which engage with the African diaspora.
Executing photography projects in an African contexts since 2016
The CAP Association, a non-profit organization based in Basel, Switzerland, was founded in November 2016 to execute African photography projects. Originating from initiatives started by Verein Liaison between 2012 and 2016, the association now oversees the CAP Prize for Contemporary African Photography. This annual prize honours five photographic portfolios that explore themes related to the African continent or its diaspora. The CROP UP festival showcases cutting-edge and thought-provoking art from Switzerland, Africa, and beyond. Until 2021, nine editions of the IAF Basel Festival for Contemporary Art focused on the African continent. Additionally, the CAP Association offers Edition POPCAP, a limited print edition featuring works by CAP Prize winners, available for purchase online and at exhibitions. They also run CAP Academy, a workshop and coaching program taught primarily by CAP Prize winners, aimed at nurturing photographic talent in African contexts.
To support its projects, the association relies on contributions and donations from its members: the CAP Fans, sponsors, and especially patrons. Additionally, funding is generated through corporate sponsorships, foundations, and public grants. Anyone interested in African photography, whether practised within Africa or connected to the continent from elsewhere, is welcome to apply for membership in the association.
